The story goes that the smuggler Victor McConnell of McConnnell Island owned the property in 1900. He was caught by the Coast Guard leaving the cabin for his nephew. The nephew wasn’t the most upstanding citizen on Orcas. Apparently he passed out one day and the cabin caught fire. The fire gutted the cabin leaving only the fireplace. The heat was so intense the bricks in the fireplace melted. The current cabin was rebuilt around fireplace giving the cabin a very unique look.
More recently the property was the home of artist/activist Margo St. James. Spend a few minutes at the Westsound Community Center where the locals still tell stories of Margo. Her art can be found at the Schlesinger Library.
